The Independent is the oldest business in Belmond. The newspaper covers the Belmond-Klemme School District in north-central Iowa, including the towns of Belmond, Rowan, Goodell and Klemme, plus the communities of Alexander, Meservey, Lake Cornelia, the north and east portions of rural Wright County, and southeast portion of rural Hancock County. The Independent has been published by Dirk and Lee van der Linden since 1985. We are members of the Iowa Newspaper Association, National Newspaper Association, Belmond Growth Alliance, the Belmond Historical Society, Friends of the Belmond Public Library, Friends of the Lyric Theater, and the Belmond Area Arts Council.
